I found another bit of 3d modelling software, but this contains it's own renderer and it's possible to export to Yafray for rendering. It's called Blender 3D. It's a bit trickier to use in terms of meshing compared to Wings 3D, but is looks really good and it uses split screens for different views.

I've managed to install some plugins that allow me to import files from Wings 3D. Unfortunately, the model gets rotated through 90 degrees, so something needs to be sorted out there.
